5-minute DIY: Turn an old aesthetic mug into a perfect succulent planter

Let's give that chipped mug a new life as a chic succulent planter — no power tools required.

An aesthetic mug repurposed as a succulent planter on a desk

We all have that one beautiful, aesthetic coffee mug in our cupboard. You know the one—it has a tiny chip on the rim, so you don’t drink from it anymore, but it’s far too pretty to throw away.

Instead of letting it gather dust, let’s give it a new life. Turning a mug into a minimalist planter is one of the easiest 5-minute DIY projects for a busy afternoon, and it looks incredibly chic on a home office desk.

The “Drop and Go” Method

The biggest mistake beginners make is planting a succulent directly into a mug without a drainage hole. Without drainage, the roots will eventually rot. But you don’t need a power drill for this!

  • Find a nursery pot: Find a tiny plastic nursery pot (the ones plants come in) that fits snugly inside your mug.
  • Plant the succulent: Plant your tiny succulent inside that plastic pot using well-draining soil.
  • The Cachepot Trick: Simply drop the plastic pot into your beautiful mug!

When it’s time to water, take the plastic pot out, run it under the sink, let it drain completely, and pop it back into the mug. It’s clean, it’s beautiful, and your plant stays perfectly healthy. Which mug are you going to repurpose today?
