The Echo Moth Caterpillar: Friend or foe to your garden?
There is an entire microscopic universe happening right under our noses in the Florida garden.
When we step into the garden, we usually focus on the big picture: the blooming flowers, the green lawns, the tall palms. But there is an entire microscopic universe happening right under our noses.
If you own a Sago Palm in Florida, you might have already met one of our most famous tiny residents: the Echo Moth caterpillar. You usually notice them when you see your beautiful, tough Sago leaves suddenly looking like Swiss cheese!
The Balance of Nature
It’s easy to panic and want to eliminate every bug we see. But as a journalist observing the garden, I’ve learned that God created a delicate balance. The Echo moth specifically chooses the Sago Palm as a nursery because the toxins in the plant actually protect the caterpillars from predators. It’s a brilliant survival strategy!
Of course, if a massive army of them is destroying your favorite plant, you might need to gently intervene (there are natural, organic sprays that help keep them away without harming the environment).
But sometimes, if the plant is established and strong, I simply watch them. They remind me that my garden isn’t just a decoration for my house; it’s a living, breathing ecosystem. Have you spotted any interesting caterpillars in your Florida garden lately?
