Breathe easy: The best air-purifying plants for your desk

Plants aren't just aesthetic background pieces for your Zoom calls. They boost mood, focus, and clean the air.

A home office desk with air-purifying plants like ZZ and Pothos

Many of us spend eight or more hours a day sitting at a desk, looking at screens, and breathing recirculated indoor air. If you often feel sluggish or get headaches during your workday, your home office might just need a little help from nature.

Plants aren’t just aesthetic background pieces for your Zoom calls; they are hardworking air filters. Adding a plant to your workspace can boost your mood, increase focus, and clean the air.

The Desk Companions (For Busy Professionals)

You need plants that won’t die if you forget about them during a busy week of meetings.

The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia): The absolute champion of the home office. It has shiny, dark green leaves that look almost fake because they are so perfect. It survives in low light, fluorescent light, and only needs water every few weeks.

Pothos (Devil’s Ivy): If you want a plant that trails beautifully off the edge of your desk or a high shelf, this is it. It grows quickly, filters toxins like formaldehyde from the air, and tells you when it’s thirsty by letting its leaves slightly droop.

Spider Plant: Don’t let the name scare you! This fun, grassy plant looks great on a shelf and is one of the best out there for filtering indoor air. It also produces tiny “babies” that you can easily cut off and share with coworkers.

Which of these green coworkers are you adding to your desk this week?
